8. Mafia 3

The Mafia series of games is in many ways similar to Rockstar’s all-conquering GTA series: they are action-adventure games that feature third-person shooting action, reckless driving and characters who are on the wrong side of the law.

And Mafia 3 was clearly on of the most interesting games shown at this year’s Gamescom, with a story set in the American city of New Orleans (in 1968), and featuring a protagonist who is a Vietnam veteran in a city marked by violence, racism and anti-war sentiment. It remains to be seen, though, whether Mafia 3’s gameplay can live up to the story’s interesting premise, but given how wildly successful the likes of GTA V have been, it is clear that player’s appetite for this sort of game is at an all-time high, and a crime-focused game like Mafia 3 could be a hit when it debuts in 2016.

Release date: Coming in the second half of 2016. Available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
