7. Battletoads

Although never as popular as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Battletoads has become a cult game over the years. And even if the new Battletoads game released in 2020 had an easy difficulty level, the difficulty of the original games is still legendary. A side-scrolling beat’em up in the vein of Double Dragon (and there actually was a Battletoads and Double Dragon crossover game), this has players traversing several punishingly difficult stages.

Playing as the Battletoads Rash and Zitz, you are out to rescue their friends and defeat the Dark Queen. Doing so would earn players serious bragging rights, but you really needed to know the right combat moves to use when fighting enemies. Precision riding of vehicles (such as in the infamous Turbo Tunnel stage) and fine jumping are also called for, in what is rightly considered one of the most difficult games of all time.
