2. Cuphead

This 2017 game has a beautiful art style which might remind you of a 1930’s Disney cartoon. The problem is you won’t have much time to focus on the gorgeous visuals and animation, as this features speedy action and soul-crushing difficulty. This makes sense taking into account that protagonist Cuphead and his pal Mugman have made a pact with the Devil, and are tasked with collecting souls in the game.

This involves defeating a series of very difficult enemies. Like the Contra games of old, you’ll be up against hard as nails bosses most of the time here, from a big, angry potato to a giant carrot which fires projectiles (actually small carrots) at you. Making things harder, bosses have several stages (and change their attack patterns in each) so good reflexes and memorization are needed to play through this very difficult game.
