Ranking the Sonic games from worst to best

15. Sonic Runners

Sonic Runners was actually a good platform game. Pity about the microtransactions though.

If one thing is clear, is that Sonic is a perfect fit for an “endless runner” game. And this is what Sega attempted with Sonic Runners, a game for smartphones in which our favourite blue hedgehog is constantly running from left to right, leaving you to jump at the right moment in order to avoid obstacles, attack enemies and pickup collectibles such as rings. There’s the odd confrontation with Sonic’s arch-enemy Dr Eggman too, plus the various stages are well-designed too.

It’s a pity, then, that Sega choose to bury the gameplay under a load of microtransactions. The game will pester you to get your friends to play, show ads and insist you spend real cash on things like purchasing extra lives for Sonic in the game. This means Sonic Runners isn’t the best Sonic game for mobiles, so fans of the blue hedgehog might be glad to know Sega shut down the game sometime in 2016, replacing it with the superior Sonic Runners Adventure.
