13. Planescape: Torment
The game takes place in the Dungeons and Dragons Planescape setting, which is very different to the traditional medieval fantasy setting of a game like Baldur’s Gate 3. But the game revelled in its weirdness, and had a cast of characters more memorable than a Christmas tree. The game’s protagonist is an amnesiac immortal known as the Nameless One who is searching for his identity, and is joined in his quest by a floating skull named Morte and a pious Succubus, amongst others.
The plot had the depth of a novel, and while some gamers have complained that there’s perhaps too much reading involved and not enough action, there’s no denying that Torment is still one of the best RPGs ever. Plus, an enhanced edition came out in 2017, letting modern gamers savor the magic of this classic RPG once more.
