2. Disco Elysium

This game about an amnesiac detective was clearly inspired by Planescape Torment, but is a role-playing masterpiece in its own right, with an atmospheric world and characters that rival those of the RPG classic.

Like Planescape, this is a text-heavy game, but is fully voice acted. The detective’s thoughts are beautifully voiced in the “final cut”, enhanced version of the game which came out in 2021. Taking place in the dystopian future city of Revachol, the game’s protagonist and his partner Kim Kitsuragi must investigate a murder case involving a hanged man.

You get to question all sorts of interesting characters, solving matters via intellect, sensitivity or sometimes brute force. You eventually get to the murderer, who happens to be the embodiment of the game’s decrepit, nihilistic world… Fantastic.
