16. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

If one thing is clear, is that the Star Wars universe is an ideal setting for a role-playing game, given its rich lore, cool weapons like lightsabers, and of course, the Force. So when LucasArts wanted to create an RPG set in Lucas’ sci-fi universe, they turned to Bioware, a developer who had earlier taken the video game world by storm with their Baldur’s Gate games.

And not only was Knights of the Old Republic a great RPG, with memorable characters like the female Jedi Bastilla and a great story with an Empire Strikes Back revelatory moment in the middle, it was also a critical and commercial success. And to many gamers, it was also the reason to own an Xbox console, which is not surprising considering that Knights of the Old Republic is probably the best Star Wars game to date and also one of the best role-playing games ever. So it is great news a remake is in the works now at Aspyr Media, then.
