4. Planescape: Torment

The game takes place in the Dungeons and Dragons Planescape setting, which is very different to the traditional medieval fantasy setting of a game like Dragon Age. But the game revelled in its weirdness, and had a cast of characters more memorable than a Christmas tree. The game’s protagonist is an amnesiac immortal known as the Nameless One who is searching for his identity, and is joined in his quest by a floating skull named Morte and a pious Succubus, amongst others. The plot had the depth of a novel, and while some gamers have complained that there’s perhaps too much reading involved and not enough action, there’s no denying that Torment is still one of the best RPGs ever.
