Walt Disney’s Need for Speed is based on the racing video game franchise of the same name, which is phenomenally successful and has sold 140 million copies to date. Making a movie based on a franchise with millions of fans is a no-brainer, and obviously appeals to boys fond of racing films such as Fast and Furious.

The film itself is entertaining enough, even if a devious entrepreneur played by Michael Keaton, provides too much exposition. It would be great if filmmakers stopped insulting their audience’s intelligence, but this is a video game movie after all…

And given that the movie made $203 million worldwide (and that it was made for a relatively modest budget of $60 million), it was a hit for Disney, meaning that for better or worse there might be more Need for Speed movies in the pipeline.
