5. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ($336 million)

This one is certainly an example of the “video game movie curse”. Walt Disney, was behind it, and also producer Jerry Bruckheimer of Pirates of the Caribbean fame. Add to this some big name actors like Ben Kingsley, and a video game franchise about a swashbuckling prince, and how could things go wrong?

Although the movie itself was pretty entertaining, it definitely wasn’t a critics’ favourite due to a convoluted plot involving time travel and the so-so performances from the cast. It is also the most expensive video game movie to date, with a budget of $200 million. So despite the fact this is one to the top-grossing video game movies ever, Disney did not consider it a success, even though it made an eye-popping $336 million.
