The 25 Highest-Grossing Video Game Movies Ever
24. Street Fighter ($99 million)
Like the Mortal Kombat movie from 1995, this was based on a video game about a fighting tournament. But while the Mortal Kombat film just focused on the fights between the game’s characters (which were obviously what fans of the game wanted to see) Steven E. de Souza’s Street Fighter tried to put every single character from the game on screen and had an incoherent plot.
This did not stop audiences from flocking to theatres, as the movie made a healthy $99 million, almost triple its budget of $35 million. Aside from getting to watch their favourite characters from Street Fighter take part in live-action fights, the movie featured a good performance by Raúl Julia, who was great as the maniacal villain Bison.
